Naxos Cyclades

Naxos island is part of the Cyclades islands in Greece. Naxos is the largest and highest island of the island group and situated in the heart of the Aegean Sea, about 140 km from the mainland of Greece and the port of Piraeus.
Naxos is known from the Greek mythology, here Theseus abandoned Ariadne when he got back from Crete where he had killed the Minotaur of king Minos. The city of Naxos was wealthy during the archaic period and continue its prosperity during the Byzantine times. Naxos was the center of the Duchy of Naxos, and in the fight of the Greek Independence fought against the Ottomans.

The island is rich in marble, agricultural products, and cheese, honey and grapefruit. Tourism represents only half of the income of its inhabitants. The biggest city and main port is the Naxos town. In the summer Naxos has many tourists from western Europe and Greece. The hotels in Naxos offers all the amenities. The island has several beaches and many attractions and ancient monuments worth visiting, the beaches in Naxos are long and sandy.

Naxos has a Mediterranean climate with cold winters, but temperatures are generally as in other Greek islands very mild, the summers are warm and sunny and the north wind Meltemi makes the most mild climate. The island of Naxos has many sunny days, and only about 70 days of rain. If the summers are dry the winters are relatively wet. The maximum temperature in summer reaches in Naxos 36-37 C. Naxos, like other Cyclades islands, is characterized by the presence of wind, three quarters of the year has winds between 2 to 6 or 7 Beaufort. The wind blows predominantly from northern directions following by the southern wind Sirocco. Naxos is an ideal place for windserfing.
